Earthquake swarm shakes nerves in Danville, San Ramon – CBS San Francisco

SAN RAMON (CBSSF) – A swarm of earthquakes rocked under the San Ramon Danville area Wednesday, with a magnitude of 3.9, giving locals a subtle reminder of seismic activity deep in the area.

The 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck at 11:43 a.m., followed by a 2.6-magnitude aftershock at 11:46 a.m., according to the US Geological Survey. A third aftershock with a magnitude of 3.0 occurred at 11:58 a.m., and more than a dozen smaller earthquakes have followed in the past several hours.

Preliminary data from the US Geological Survey showed that the earthquake struck an area off El Capitan Drive just west of Danville’s Crowe Canyon, near the border with San Ramon.

It was felt as far east as San Francisco, as far north as Vallejo, and as far south as Santa Cruz, according to USGS data.

“I thought I felt an earthquake here in San Francisco,” Marie French tweeted.

Near the epicenter, I felt a strong shaking.

“Yes, a lot of vibration in San Ramon,” M Everest tweeted.

“It was so scary here in San Ramon,” Shaq wrote on Twitter. “Maybe that was for two seconds… it felt like a lifetime.”

In the aftermath of the earthquake, BART trains were briefly suspended and tracks checked, a standard operating procedure in the aftermath of earthquakes.

BART recovers from a previous problem. There is a widespread 10-minute delay system in all directions due to a previous earthquake that was recorded within the BART service area.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.

At San Ramon Valley Christian Academy, student Harper Skaggs put the skills she learned during The Great Shake Out to use as she and her classmates spent five minutes under their desks.

“It was strong, because I was right around the corner. I was in school for social studies and I felt the whole thing and we had to love sitting under desks,” Harper told KPIX 5.

The USGS says that the earthquakes and subsequent aftershocks were most likely part of the Calaveras fault system, possibly focused on the Pleasanton Fault and that this may be the beginning of a long period of seismicity.

“The San Ramon Valley experiences what are known as earthquake swarms – where there can be dozens of earthquakes over the course of days and weeks,” said USGS geophysicist Brian Kilgore.

The US Geological Survey says there is a 26% chance of an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or higher occurring in the Calaveras Fault in the next 30 years, which is a slightly lower chance of an expected “big” occurrence in the Hayward Fault.
