5.1-magnitude earthquake strikes eastern province of Turkey – AZERTAC

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit the eastern province of Erzurum, Anadolu Agency reported on Friday.

The quake shook the Kuprukoy district of Erzurum at 3.40 pm local time (1240 GMT), according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said in a statement that a citizen was injured in the village of Mervit. She pointed out that five ambulances, two rescue teams and 24 people were sent to the scene of the accident.

It added that it occurred at a depth of 5.18 kilometers (3.2 miles) below the surface.

Erzurum Governor Okay Mimis told Anadolu Agency that they had received a report that several villages were destroyed due to the earthquake.

Mimis added that two people were pulled out of the rubble in the Topko neighborhood.

The Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Murat Kurum said on Twitter that the teams of the regional directorates of the ministry were sent to the region to start the necessary investigations.
