A slight earthquake hit the Omani peninsula near the Emirates, hours after the largest Iranian earthquake

A small earthquake occurred near Musandam in the early hours of Saturday morning, hours after a larger earthquake occurred in southern Iran.

The National Center of Meteorology said that the earthquake, with a magnitude of 2.5, hit the southern region of the Omani Peninsula, about 30 kilometers north of the Emirates, at 5.35 am.

It added that an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 was also recorded in southern Iran at 10:52 pm on Friday.

There was no effect in the Emirates.

The earthquakes were felt in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the northern emirates last week after two earthquakes struck Iran within a minute on November 14.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded in southern Iran at 4.07 p.m., followed by a 6.7-magnitude earthquake, the National Center of Meteorology reported.

There have been 10 smaller earthquakes since then, according to the NCM, all in roughly the same area.

The UAE is occasionally hit by strong earthquakes in Iran, which is one of the most seismically active countries in the world.

It is crossed by several major faults that cover at least 90 percent of the country, making earthquakes there common and often devastating.

Since 1900, at least 126,000 people have died as a result of earthquakes in Iran.

The United Arab Emirates, which lies at the edge of the Arab tectonic plate, experiences only mild to moderate tremors. The Northern Emirates is the most seismically active region.

Dibba, Fujairah, which lies on an active fault line that crosses into Oman, experiences small to medium earthquakes with magnitudes of 4 to 5.5, according to a seismic hazard assessment survey conducted by UAE authorities.

In 2002, Masafi in Fujairah was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 5, the largest earthquake to hit the United Arab Emirates in recent years.
