CANBERRA, Australia – Researchers from the Australian National University (ANU) have embarked on a journey to unravel the secrets of the Earth’s inner layers.

The team led by ANU departed on November 10 on a three-week mission to retrieve 27 seismometers – instruments that record Earth’s motion during earthquakes – from the ocean floor near Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean.

Published in October 2020, the devices point to the center of the Earth and collect data on intense underwater earthquakes.

The researchers hope the data will help them better understand the Earth’s inner layers and what causes underwater earthquakes and tsunamis.

“It’s in an area where the Australian plate meets the Pacific plate, but it’s not known as an active subduction zone, so these earthquakes are still a mystery to us,” chief scientist Hrvuje Tkalić of the ANU Research School of Earth Sciences told a media outlet. release on Monday.

“Scientifically, perhaps the most exciting gain of this project is that it can help us add the missing pieces to one of the biggest puzzles in plate tectonics – how subduction begins.

Tkalči said it could take up to six hours to recover one seismometer and another two hours to rise to the surface.
