Only 5 Only: Medford School District Board members tour the construction site of a new middle school

Medford, Oregon. On Monday afternoon, Medford School Board toured the construction site of the new Oakdale Middle School. The historic site is in the midst of a major renovation to make it safe and useful for students, and only NBC5 News was on site to take a look.

Not only is the work upgrading the areas that are close to 90 years old, but it’s also about bringing things up to code level. About $18 million alone will go into invisible changes like making the structure earthquake safe and making parts of the school reach the ADA.

“The scope of work is kind of reconfigured to fit the middle school impact. There has been some restructuring of the facility, the vast majority of which are solely aimed at modifying it and bringing it to life safety standards for seismic events,” said project manager Ron Hafnier. It’s been a long time in the future. It’s a great example of how so many people across the community have been able to come together and fund this project.” He says the project will go beyond the campus and affect the area as a whole.

Besides promotions, the site has also come with a new name. The nickname “Oakdale” seemed an easy choice for the board of directors, given the history around the campus.

The Oakdale School is located in the historic district of Medford, the Historic District of Oakdale, which makes it a great name to go to where we are in the future. “It’s really appropriate,” CEO Susan Messer explained. She adds that the changes made to prevent earthquakes will make the school an “instant first aid and response site” for the community. The school will also have a memorial garden to learn about the history of military families in the area.

Part of the work at the school also includes memorization. The area hopes to cut and match some of the gym’s original wood floors, at least from before the 1950s. They are also working to preserve the historic windows’ exterior while improving their functionality inside.

With the nails hammered in and the foundations recast, the next steps would be to create the redistricting maps, find a principal, and then select the fun stuff, like the school’s colors and mascot.
