Ruth Florida Roster Supports “Confirmed Leader” Katherine Waldron in the HD 86

Palm Beach Democratic Port Commissioner Catherine Waldron secured endorsement Tuesday from Florida’s Roth List in her bid for Florida House District 86, the third time an abortion rights group has supported the longtime Palm Beach County resident.

Waldron, the only woman in a four-way race to replace Representative Matt Welheit next year, is a “proven leader who has a deep understanding of the needs of the region,” Kayla van Wieringen, political director for Roth’s List in Florida, said in a newspaper. Note announces endorsement.

However, Waldron’s interests have been shown to extend well beyond the borders of her region. In the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, which struck Florida and the Caribbean within two weeks of each other in September 2017, I co-founded Palm Beach County Cares to raise and provide supplies and donated funds to rebuild Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Since then, the organization has moved on to other charitable efforts, including providing post-earthquake aid to Haiti.

Waldron, whose primary program gives environmental protection and economic growth, adds Roth’s support for the Florida List to dozens of previous endorsements from elected officials, including U.S. Representative Lewis Frankel, State Representative Michael Caruso, former U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic Robin Bernstein, and the other co-founder of Palm Beach County Cares.

She was the first Democrat to apply this year to race the HD 86, and remains the only woman to run a four-way competition to fill the seat that Wilheit announced he would be leaving in April for the Palm Beach County commission.

Other candidates include two Democratic fellows – former Wellington mayor Bob Margulies and social worker Seth Dinson – and Republican physician Dr. Solis Banionis.

Republican Susan Kovdakis Rivera ran for the seat in January before Wellheit announced he would not run for another term. However, it appears that her campaign website has not been updated since the 2020 election cycle, and the Florida Department of Elections does not include her as a candidate in the race.

HD 86 covers part of Palm Beach County, including Wellington, Royal Palms Beach, and Luxahatchee Groves. The region is highly democratic, with a double-digit voter registration advantage.

Since signing up to run, Waldron’s campaign has raised $37,000, including a $10,000 self-loan. Of that, it spent $17,500 through October 31.

Margolis raised $3,400 and spent about $12,500 over about the same period. Densen, who jumped into the race in September, spent half of the $4,000 he raised.

Banionis has not reported to the state on any contributions or expenditures.
