Fears of Covid’s “worst” variant because UK bans flights from southern Africa – BBC News

Scientists have warned that a new variant of coronavirus is the “worst” they have ever seen. Variation B.1.1.529 has mutations which means that it can prevent immunity caused by previous Covid infections or vaccines. Cases have also been detected in southern Africa and Hong Kong. The UK is temporarily banning flights from six countries in southern Africa – Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Eswatini – and puts them on its Red List, which means that arriving passengers must be quarantined.
