A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hits the border area between Myanmar and India

An earthquake hit the border region between Myanmar and India on Friday, with tremors being felt in neighboring Bangladesh.

According to the Indian National Center of Seismology, the 6.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in the early morning hours of Friday, around 5.15 am IST at a depth of 12 kilometers and about 140 kilometers from Aizawl in northeastern India.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

No landslides or liquefaction were expected in the area, according to the US Geological Survey, but it noted that damage could “occur in highly affected areas.”

According to testimonies published by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) on its website and on social media, tremors were felt in three countries. Several people reported that it was a 30-second “long jolt” across most of the eastern Indian cities of Kolkata and Guwahati.

The quake was felt in many eastern states of India such as West Bengal, Tripura and Assam, as well as a few areas in Bangladesh including the coastal city of Chittagong, 174 km away from the quake.

“I was getting up from the bed, the bed started shaking and a few seconds later the doors were shaking, the ceiling fans were shaking too, and the neighbors were running outside from the three-story building,” according to a witness account posted on the center’s website from Bangladesh.

Twitter user Saizul Amin wrote: “I felt severe #shocks here in Bangladesh.”

“This was the longest yet. Let’s just say we all woke up to an incredible alarm this morning,” another witness in Hnahthial, India, wrote on ESMC.

EMSC later reduced the magnitude of the earthquake to 5.8 and said the epicenter was about 126 kilometers southeast of Aizawl in northeastern India.
