Earthquake-like tremors felt in Bengaluru: The Tribune India

Bengaluru and the surrounding areas experienced light earthquake-like tremors on Friday for a few seconds, which created fear among the people. However, the official statement from Karnataka State Center for Natural Disaster Management (KSNDMC) made it clear that seismographs showed no signs of localized tremors or earthquake.

People in Rajarajeshwarinagar, Kengeri, Kaggalipura, Hemmigepura and Yeshwanthpur localities in Bengaluru experienced mild tremors for a few seconds. They also heard loud bangs and noises.

Reports of tremors associated with light tremors were received between 11.50 am and 12.15 pm. A little earlier, there was a loud sound in the neighboring Mandya and Ramnagar districts as well. People near Jigani and Anekal on the outskirts of Bengaluru heard a loud noise and felt some tremors around 12.15pm. Several people took to Twitter to find out what was going on.

Geologist Prakash said, “Although it is a light and small incident, we will have to do studies. We have to study it and we cannot take it lightly.” He explained that there is no relationship between the earthquake and the continuous rain in the state capital. Bengaluru was last hit by a moderate earthquake in 2011. Earlier, on many occasions, people were tremors due to the movement of fighter jet flights which made a sound effect.

However, the KSNDMC release stated that “data from our seismographs were analyzed for any potential seismic or earthquake signatures during the time period. The seismometers show no signs of a localized tremor or earthquake.” – Ian
