USGS reports 3.0 earthquake 6 miles west of Panguitch – St. George News

St. A small earthquake occurred Friday morning 6 miles west of Panguitch near the border of Garfield and Iron counties.

The 3.0-magnitude earthquake was reported by the USGS around 6:40 a.m. in an area along India’s Hulu Trial.

Vibration from a 3.0-magnitude earthquake is marked by the USGS as weak to light, and “remarkably felt by people indoors, especially on higher floors of buildings. Many people are unaware that it is an earthquake. Parked cars may vibrate slightly. Similar shaking to the passing of a truck.”

While one person reported to the USGS “Did you feel it?” That they felt the earthquake, the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office told St. George News that it had not received any calls from area residents regarding the event.

Approximately 700 earthquakes and aftershocks occur throughout Utah annually, with only 2% being felt, according to the University of Utah. The university also states that earthquakes can occur anywhere in Utah and “approximately 13 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater occur in the area each year.”
