Albania remembers, two years after the devastating earthquake – Exit

Today, November 26, 2021, marks two years since the 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Albania, killing 51, injuring hundreds and leaving thousands homeless.

The earthquake that struck Durres and Tirana at 03.56 and lasted about 50 seconds affected more than 200,000 people and caused damages worth more than one billion euros. Buildings, homes and schools collapsed, and emergency services were overwhelmed with calls for help. Within hours, resources and aid began arriving from neighboring countries.

Today, two years later, new homes are being rebuilt but some still live in tents.

Affected municipalities included Tirana, Durres, Šijak, Kruja, Kamza, Kavaja, Corbin, Lezhi, Rogozin, and Merdeta. The biggest damage was in Thoman, where a five-storey building collapsed.

Emergency tents have been set up in Durres and Toman to provide emergency accommodation for about 1,000 people.

Prime Minister Edi Rama today commemorated the event through a Facebook message. He said tragedies are being sent to test us but Albania has come out stronger. Rama added that thousands of families are better off today than they were before the earthquake.

Education Minister Yves Koshi chose to mark the day by talking about the “several new schools of European standards” that have been built. “We still have a lot of work to do, so we are not going to stop, for the good of our children, and for the good of Albania,” she added.
