3.0-magnitude earthquake strikes southern Utah on Black Friday

Panguitch, Utah (ABC4) – If you live near Panguitch, Utah, you might have felt some rumble to start Black Friday.

The University of Utah seismological stations reported that a 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck the western edge of Garfield County between Barwan and Panguitch shortly before 6:40 a.m.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was reported along the Indian Hollow Trail southeast of the Dixie National Forest. You can see the approximate location on the screenshot of the USGS map below.

This earthquake appears to be part of the Intermountain seismic belt, according to the USGS. The belt is a prominent north-south seismic zone in West Intermountain. In southern Utah, the Intermountain belt is characterized by “scattered earthquakes with dense local clusters of small to medium-sized earthquakes,” the USGS reports.

US seismological stations have reported that this is the latest earthquake in southern Utah in the past two weeks. It is the largest earthquake recorded in Utah in the past 14 days.

In late October, a series of minor earthquakes were reported across central and southern Utah, including a 3.3-magnitude earthquake near Mills and a 3.26-magnitude earthquake near Greenville.

Experts warned that Utah may be due to a major earthquake event, especially affecting the Wasatch front. This could pose a significant threat to older buildings and homes throughout Salt Lake City, which experts say are most at risk of an earthquake.
