The toppling of the stacks was the largest demolition activity that Victoria’s Seismology Research Centre (SRC) has ever recorded.

The SRC operates the largest private earthquake observatory in the world and has the most seismograph stations in Australia.

“We saw the rumbling from the impact of all that energy going into the ground at many of our stations, up to 200 kilometres away and it was surprising to see it felt so far away,” Seismologist Adam Pascale said.

Mr Pascale said the demolition produced the same amount of energy as a magnitude one earthquake.

“Normally with an earthquake we usually get one big spike from the main energy release, but this one just kept going on and on and on for longer than an earthquake,” he said.

“You’ve got to imagine, those towers coming down 200 kilometres away and still able to shake the ground at a measurable distance is pretty amazing.”

Thousands lined the streetsThe plant’s owner, Engie, confirmed the weather conditions were appropriate, and at 12:27pm on Monday, the first of the eight chimneys started to crumble.(ABC Gippsland)

‘Ruffy’ and his son Ollie from Traralgon waited for more than two hours in chilly conditions, from their vantage point on the side of the Mirboo North road, to watched the chimneys topple.

“It was crazy, I have never seen so many people out on that part of the road, the traffic was incredible,” he said.

“We heard it was getting delayed so we were going to go and get some food, but then we realised we probably wouldn’t get back to where we were, so we just waited it out and ended up with a very hungry little boy in the end.”

Despite their dedication, Ruffy’s son Ollie must have looked away at the moment the first chimney fell, and he missed the spectacle.

“But missing one didn’t really matter ‘cos all the others were really amazing, it just looked really, really cool … but the thump sort of scared me,” Ollie said.

“It was like a ‘BANG’ and it was loud and I jumped up.”

Vicky Hams used binoculars to watch the chimneys fall from her driveway on Willow Grove Road in Tanjil South.

“I used the ABC livestream to get the timing right and I heard someone say ‘one minute’,” she said.

“Then one by one I just saw them all disappear from the landscape and it was a quite a few seconds later that I could actually hear the successive booms, which was quite bizarre because the chimneys weren’t even there anymore.

“The booms were quite distinct and the cattle in the paddock around me all lifted their heads and started to moo and sort of raced off and gathered in a circle so I assume they could all feel it too.”
