The Rockefeller Foundation and the WHO identify priorities for global health collaboration
From November 8 to 10, 2021, Dr. Naveen Rao, Senior Vice President of Health and other senior representatives from the Rockefeller Foundation joined representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) to review the strategic directions of cooperation between the two organizations. In particular, they discussed support for the WHO Emergency Program and the Department of Science, including the WHO Pandemic and Epidemic Information Center, genomic surveillance, infodemiology, vaccine equity and demand generation, and WHO ongoing work with philanthropic organizations.
“The Rockefeller Foundation and the WHO have worked together to address global health challenges since the WHO was first established,” said Ms. Jane Ellison, Executive Director of External Relations and Governance. “The Foundation’s support has been – and will continue to be – fundamental, helping the WHO make great strides in ensuring equitable health outcomes for all.”
The Rockefeller Foundation’s collaboration with the WHO dates back to the time when the WHO Constitution was first created. For the past two decades, the Rockefeller Foundation has continued to be a key contributor, providing over $ 25.3 million in support to WHO programs.
Recent collaboration has focused on digital health capacity building in data and innovation to protect and promote health and well-being. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the two organizations worked together to maintain basic health services everywhere, expand virus testing capacity, strengthen and accelerate the digitization of WHO guidelines, and improve access to digital products to end the current pandemic and prevent future ones. The Rockefeller Foundation and the WHO are currently jointly leading the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-A) Genomic Surveillance Working Group.
