Indonesia accuses students of treason for raising Papuan flag

Jakarta (AFP): Indonesian authorities detained and charged eight students from West Papua, on Thursday, for flying the banned Morning Star flag used by independence supporters in the restive province, police said.

Dozens gathered on Wednesday at a stadium in West Papua’s capital Jayapura to mark the anniversary of the region’s declaration of independence from Dutch colonial rule in 1961, before Indonesia seized power two years later.

Papua police spokesman, Ahmed Mustafa Kamal, said the eight students were tasked with organizing and attending a banned event as well as producing materials promoting Papuan independence.

“They displayed banners, sang a song and shouted ‘Papuan independence’ during the march,” Kamal told AFP.

If found guilty of treason, the students could face life imprisonment.

Michael Hellmann, the group’s lawyer, confirmed the arrests and said other Papuan students who protested on Wednesday in Bali and Ambon city were harassed by police, but no further arrests were made.

Rights groups say Jakarta is increasingly turning to accusations of treason to stifle dissent, with more than 50 Papuan activists facing off in recent years.

They include other activists accused of flying the flag of Papua’s independence, which is banned in the world’s third largest democracy.

The province shares a border with the independent Papua New Guinea on the island of New Guinea, north of Australia.

Papua, a former Dutch colony, declared its independence in 1961, but neighboring Indonesia took control of it two years later promising a referendum on independence.

The subsequent vote to remain part of Indonesia, to which the United Nations agreed at the time, was widely considered a hoax.

The Papuans in Melanesia, who are mostly Christians, share few cultural ties with the rest of Indonesia, the largest Muslim-majority country in the world.
