The earthquake was reported Friday morning in Arkansas near the Boone and Marion County line

PIAT, ark (KY3) – A small earthquake was reported along the Boone County and Marion County line early Friday morning by the USGS.

The earthquake measured 2.8 on the Richter scale, and the epicenter was located approximately one mile north of Highway 412, at the county line.

So far, no significant damage has been reported from the quake, which occurred at around 5:50 a.m. However, it woke up many residents of the area as the windows were shaking and the floors were shaking.

“I heard a big explosion,” said Marjorie Dougherty, and said the tremor woke her up. “First, I thought someone was tampering with my car or blew up my car because someone decided to try to steal it once.”

In that small town of Beat, Arkansas things usually stay quiet, which is exactly what the locals love. But that was not the case early Friday morning.

“It flew like an oncoming freight train, you know, I’m just as close as you guys are to these tracks, but that’s what it looked like,” explained Charles Ray Dickerson, of BYAT.

Anything less than 3 degrees is rarely felt, says Scott Osbrookes, director and geologist with the Arkansas Geological Survey.

“Usually grade 3 is about where we expect to feel,” he explained. But there are other factors at play in that, one of which is the depth, it was about 4.6 kilometers deep. So, in a relative sense, it was more shallow.”

But it was still enough to frighten many residents.

“Oh, I felt it, and so did my dogs, and my dogs went crazy,” said Dougherty, who said several pictures fell off the walls.

This is the second earthquake reported in the area in less than a month, causing concern for those staying nearby.

“In terms of their frequency, it seems like this is what these things do: You’ll go for a while without activity and then some earthquakes will kick in,” Osbrookes said. “This is very common and we don’t see any indication of increased activity or increased activity.”

In 2017, there was a series of small earthquakes around Bergman, Arkansas, just north of Harrison. Since then, no major earthquakes have been reported.

But some locals consider it a sign.

“It’s up to the guy upstairs how I look at it,” Dickerson said.

“Everyone better get up, and if you’re not safe, get in there and save us,” Dougherty said.

“I don’t think it’s anything to worry about at this time, it’s leading to anything major,” Ausbrooks said.

The Arkansas Geological Survey says leaders will continue to monitor the area and if subsequent activity follows, they will look to install more seismic monitoring tools in the area.
