‘Shaking constantly’: Tokara island chain hit by nearly 200 earthquakes over four days

Kagoshima – Four days, almost 200 earthquakes and the ground is still shaking.

Such was the life recently for the inhabitants of the Tokara Islands, a small chain located within Kagoshima Prefecture. But officials and experts say earthquakes are not necessarily a cause for concern.

The weather agency said it did not know exactly what caused the mostly small earthquakes but added that they could last for about a week. The earthquake group began on Saturday. On Sunday, the largest earthquake to date – measuring 4.8 on the Japanese Shindo scale – was on the island of Akusiki, which is home to 60 people. Monday and Tuesday saw earthquakes that hit Shindo 3, but the rest were Shindo 1 or 2.

No injuries or property damage were reported in Toshima village, which was hit by the strongest earthquake.

“It feels like (the ground) is constantly shaking, which makes us feel uneasy,” said Miho Kanda, who heads the branch office on Akoseki Island in Toshima.

The area experienced a similar series of mostly small earthquakes in April, when 265 tremors ranging from 1 to 4 rattled the nerves of local residents.

Sewanose Island, a volcanic island in the Tokara chain – where the Meteorological Agency has issued a Level 3 Volcanic Warning, which prohibits people from entering the area – is nearby, but the Meteorological Agency has not reported any major seismic changes there and said the probability is low. So much so that earthquakes are caused by volcanic activity.

The recent earthquakes are unlikely to affect any massive earthquake centered in the Nankai Basin, an enormous ocean-floor trench that stretches off the southern coast of Japan from Shizuoka Prefecture to the island of Kyushu, said Yukihiro Nakatani, an assistant professor at Kagoshima University. .

“The earthquakes we’re seeing now seem like a local phenomenon, so I don’t think we need to consider the impact that it might have on the Nankai Trough plate areas,” he said.

A separate group of small earthquakes has hit the Izu Oshima island region, which is administered by Tokyo, since Saturday. Dozens of earthquakes struck on Monday alone, all with a magnitude of Shendo 1.
