There is no risk of a tsunami after earthquakes off the coast of Oregon

Four earthquakes greater than 5.0 magnitude struck 200-250 miles west of Newport on Tuesday afternoon.

Newport, Oregon. Several earthquakes struck far off the coast of Oregon Tuesday afternoon, but there was no danger of a tsunami, the National Weather Service said. The earthquakes struck approximately 200 to 250 miles off the coast of Newport.

Two earthquakes of magnitude 5.3 and 5.5 struck around 1:30 and 2 p.m. respectively after a series of smaller earthquakes in the same area. Two more hits, with a force of 5.0 and 5.7, several hours later. Another earthquake, measuring 5.7, struck in the same area shortly before 5:30 pm

The latest earthquake map from the United States Geological Service (USGS) shows all earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 and above in the past 24 hours.

Earthquakes are relatively common off the coast of Oregon, which is a reminder of the state’s proximity to moving fault lines. The Juan de Fuca plate off the coast is increasing pressure and subsidence under the North American plate and has not produced a major earthquake in more than 300 years. Scientists predict a 37% chance of an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 or higher in the Cascadia subduction zone over the next 50 years, likely to cause a major tsunami and potentially devastate much of the northwest.

ShakeAlert, an earthquake early warning system, launched in Oregon earlier this year. The system consists of a network of sensors that share information about the magnitude, location and vibration expected from earthquakes on the West Coast.
