Eighteen earthquakes struck Tuesday off the coast of Oregon, with the two largest measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale.

The earthquakes struck far off the coast, roughly west of Newport. A tsunami is not expected.

Small earthquakes often strike near the Oregon coast, a regular reminder of the catastrophic earthquake that geologists say will occur when pressure building between the Juan de Fuca plate and North America breaks.

According to Oregon officials, scientists say there is a 37% chance that an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 or higher will occur at the boundary between the two tectonic plates, called the Cascadia subduction zone, in the next 50 years.

Earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 to 3 are the smallest earthquakes that are generally felt by people, while earthquakes of magnitude 4 can cause moderate damage and earthquakes of magnitude 5 can cause significant damage.
