Two earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 were recorded within minutes in the highlands.

On Saturday evening at about 5:30 p.m., the first earthquake was felt in Ullapool – and another struck just five minutes later, according to the British Geological Survey.

This follows a 3.3-magnitude earthquake west of Lochjelbed in November. The earthquake was felt as far away as Edinburgh and even recorded in seismographs in Ireland.

A few days after that, a 2.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded near Spean Bridge, Lochaber.

The British Geological Survey says there are between 200 and 300 earthquakes in the UK each year, and they are usually less than 3.0 degrees.

Earthquakes are rare in Scotland, and they are usually not felt by members of the public. However, about 30 people were said to have felt the November earthquake.
