Indonesia earthquake: Tsunami warning issued after 7.3-magnitude earthquake

The Indonesian island of Flores was hit by a 7.3-magnitude earthquake, prompting the country’s monitoring agency to issue a tsunami warning, although that quake was later withdrawn.

The quake occurred at a depth of 18.5 kilometers under the sea, according to the US Geological Survey, and was located 112 kilometers north of the second largest island city in East Nusa Tenggara Province.

It is not yet clear if there have been any casualties from the undersea earthquake, but authorities have indicated that several buildings and public property have suffered some damage.

Nearly two hours after the earthquake, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency decided to withdraw the tsunami warning, although it asked local residents in East Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi to remain vigilant.

Alphonse Hada Petain, head of the East Flores Disaster Mitigation Agency, revealed that the earthquake lasted for several minutes and caused people to flee their homes.

The last earthquake in Indonesia

The last time Indonesia was hit by a strong 6.2-magnitude earthquake was last January, in which 105 people were killed and about 6,500 injured in West Sulawesi province.

Tuesday’s undersea earthquake occurred exactly 10 days after the eruption of Mount Semeru, which killed 48 people and injured hundreds.
