High winds, wildfires, and earthquakes have been reported across Kansas

Topeka – High winds Wednesday in Kansas reduced visibility, closing roads and power outages across the state.

Alerts from the National Weather Service indicated that some areas of the state will experience wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour. A 100 mph gust was reported in Russell.

The resulting gusts of wind and dust storms prompted the Kansas Department of Transportation to close multiple roads in western Kansas, including Interstate 70 heading west between Salina and the Colorado State Line and eastbound between Goodland and Russell. All state roads in Cheyenne, Decatur, Gough, Logan, Rollins, Sheridan, Sherman and Thomas Wallace counties were also closed.

The Transportation Department updates road closures regularly.

In Shawnee County, Gov. Laura Kelly responded to safety concerns about high wind speeds by issuing a stormy weather announcement from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Non-essential governor workers who work in-person will be sent home.

Reno County Transportation also halted fixed-route bus service at 2 p.m. in response to a severe thunderstorm warning. The roads may resume service if the weather calms down.

Evergie crews are actively responding to the power outage due to high winds, which could last until midnight on Wednesday. The electric company advised customers to prepare for possible outages by having light bulbs, batteries, water and non-perishable food ready. Customers must report any outage to Evergy.

There were also reports of out-of-control wildfires that forced evacuations in Sheridan County and Ellis Township.
