A Chinese inventor created the world’s first earthquake detector 2000 years ago

Zhang Heng, a Chinese astronomer, mathematician, engineer, and inventor made the first seismometer or seismograph in AD 132. He lived between 25 and 220 AD during the Han Dynasty.

Zhang is known for developing the world’s first hydro-powered armball for astronomical observation, improving the water clock, and cataloging more than 2,500 stars in a detailed star catalog. He is also credited with inventing the first odometer.

The Zhang is about 6 feet in diameter and has eight dragons positioned head down along the outside of the barrel, indicating the cardinal compass directions. Each dragon has a small bronze ball in its mouth. Eight Bronze Frogs stood under the dragons, their jaws wide open, ready to accept balls.

One of the balls will fall when the device detects an incoming seismic wave, and the sound will inform the onlookers of the earthquake. It also provides a general estimate of the direction of the earthquake’s origin.

The seismic detector developed by Zhang Heng is believed to be very accurate. Hundreds of kilometers away, the equipment was able to determine the direction of the earthquake.

Some form of sensing system is claimed to be inside a seismometer. The basic or inverted pendulum, according to experts, was part of the mechanism.

Experts duplicated Zhang’s seismoscope, to estimate the content of the internal mechanism using technology that was available during the era of the great inventor. They used the clone to determine earthquakes using waves from four real earthquakes in China and Vietnam.

In fact, the data collected during the experiments is identical to that of modern seismometers.
