Weather Network – M3.6 earthquake strikes Vancouver Island, wakes residents

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2021 9:29 AM – The early morning earthquake did not generate a tsunami threat, and there were no reports of damage or injuries.

An earthquake occurred off the coast of British Columbia early Friday morning, with an initial magnitude of 3.6, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake occurred 45 km southwest of Vancouver at a depth of 17 km.

Eyewitnesses reported the effects on social media shortly after the quake struck at 4:13 a.m. local time.

“Wake me up. I felt it in Cobble Hill, British Columbia,” wrote Twitter user, Peter Harvey.

Another Twitter user, Lisa Ochner, said, “I woke up. In James Bay, Victoria.”

Earthquakes of this strength are not uncommon in the region. British Columbia and the American Pacific Northwest are among the most earthquake-prone parts of North America, and British Columbia itself experiences more earthquakes than the rest of Canada combined in the year.

That’s because the region is part of the Cascadia subduction zone, where the Juan de Fuca plate descends below, or “goes down,” the much larger North American plate. From time to time, one plate sticks to another, causing the buildup of earthquake stress.

While shaking is most common in parts of Vancouver Island, shaking from Friday’s earthquake was felt on the mainland as well.
