A 4.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded 39 kilometers (24 miles) northeast of Milan, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). The epicenter was in Punete Soto, a small town outside the city of Bergamo, and struck at 11.34 am local time (10.34 am GMT).

It reached a depth of 27 kilometers and tremors were felt all over Pavia, Como and Milan.

Panic erupted in Italy’s second largest city, whose district has a population of about eight million.

Local reporters and residents reported that the ground and even homes shook.

“An earthquake in Milan. It can be felt very well on the ground floor as well,” said Martina Benesi, Corriere della Sera correspondent.

Milan’s fire department said there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in the city.

The microplate is located in the deformation zone at the boundary between the Eurasian and African plates.

The most destructive earthquake that struck Italy was recorded in the Strait of Messina in 1908.

The earthquake measured 7.5 on the Richter scale and caused a tsunami that exceeded 40 feet.

It is estimated that more than 100,000 people died in the earthquake and subsequent floods.
