Rapid Response Center takes a “big step” to reduce earthquakes

Berman Bassin, Texas (Nexstar) – With four more earthquakes occurring Wednesday and Thursday in Northwest Midland County, the Railroad Commission has ordered an indefinite suspension of all deep-water injections of oil and gas in the area as of December 31.

This is the latest in a series of actions the Regional Rehabilitation Center has taken to help ensure that the agency takes all necessary measures to protect residents and the environment in the area.

Disposal well operators in the RRC’s Gardendale Seismic Response Area, just north of Odessa and northwest Midland, will not be allowed to inject below the top of the thatch formation, which occurs at a depth of about 10,000 feet but can vary, according to the RRC.

The center said it had determined that the suspensions were necessary due to the ever-increasing pattern of earthquakes in the area. The earthquakes on Wednesday and Thursday measured 3.1, 3.6, 3.7 and 3.3 on the Richter scale, according to the state’s TexNet earthquake monitoring program.

Inspectors and geologists constantly check disposal activity and monitor seismic data. RRC staff have monitored nearly 30 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 3.0 in the Gardendale SRA since December 2019.

It will allow operators of existing disposal wells in the Gardendale SRA to apply to amend their permits for surface injection, such as in the San Andres formation, the top of which is located at a depth of approximately 5,000 feet. It will require sealing deeper portions of these modified disposal wells, according to the release.

The center said seismologists and their staff will continue to monitor earthquakes in the area and take further measures, as necessary.
