California earthquake: Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes North Coast

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake was reported off the coast of Eureka in Northern California.

The quake occurred around 12.10pm local time at a depth of 5.8 miles, and the National Weather Service confirmed that no tsunami was expected after the quake.

“No tsunamis is the main message we’re getting out,” Alex Dodd, a meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency based in Eureka, told Fox26 News. “The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, is always keeping a close eye on these things, and they immediately declared this a non-tsunami earthquake, so you don’t have to worry.”

He added that the shaking caused a few small landslides, and some families reported minor damage, mainly due to falling objects.

“Fortunately, that was about the extent of it,” he said.

But the earthquake was not over yet.

“Many small aftershocks are being recorded,” the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services said Monday.

The quake was felt by residents in coastal communities in the area like Ferndale Town, where food wobbled off the shelves at a Valley grocery store.

“Valley Grocery moments after the earthquake,” local journalist Caroline Titus said, posting a photo on Twitter of the damage. The owner said ten volunteers showed up and helped clean up. The store is now open again.”

Geologists with the California Geological Survey in San Francisco, about 300 miles to the south, reported that they felt the earthquake.

The USGS requires those who have felt an earthquake to voluntarily provide data about where and how they were exposed on the agency’s website.
