6.2 magnitude earthquake hit Northern California

An earthquake of magnitude 6.2 shook northern California on Monday, the US Geological Survey said.

CNN said the earthquake, which occurred off Cape Mendocino near Humboldt County, could be felt about 270 miles away in San Francisco as well as in Chico.

The 4,000-square-mile county that was hit by the quake has a population of 135,000, CNN added.

Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal told CNN that the county “hasn’t been in such a shock since 2010.”

Al-Sharif added that emergency responders were surveying the damages, and no catastrophic damages were reported and he was not aware of any injuries.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office announced via Twitter that “several aftershocks of the smaller earthquake” were recorded, but there was no tsunami threat at the time.

The California Office of Emergency Services also confirmed in a tweet that “at this time, no tsunami or other threat to the coast is expected as a result of today’s earthquake.”

Earlier on Monday, the Office of Emergency Services said it was “actively monitoring” the earthquake and coordinating closely with local partners in the area to protect communities from any secondary effects.
