On Monday, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit the northern California coast. The disaster, which usually caused panic among people, did not even bother the residents.

No major casualties or injuries were reported, and the day passed with minimal panic.

The inhabitants knew well in advance of the calamity that would follow. That’s thanks to America’s first public earthquake warning app that gives you “seconds to get ready.”

The app, known as ShakeAlert, is run by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) that sends an SMS alert to people seconds before an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 or greater is about to shake their location.

The app, available for Android and Apple smartphones, covers Los Angeles County only.

“We’ve had some reports from people that they get a warning of up to 10 seconds before they feel a shake. It’s very good,” Robert de Groot, ShakeAlert coordinator with the USGS, told The Guardian.

A data packet is generated from information provided by USGS sensors and – within seconds – shown on phones. Some apps that provide alerts are available for download, but some apps that don’t have an app on their phone have been notified. Affected individuals are asked to fall, cover, and hold.

The earthquake occurred shortly after noon, with its epicenter off the coast, near a small town called Petrolia with a population of less than 1,000 people.

The US Geological Survey estimated economic losses at less than $10 million and no deaths.

Pictures showed smashed shop windows, broken bottles falling into store aisles, and tiles falling from the roof of a commercial building.

The last time the area was hit by an earthquake of similar strength was in 1993, when one person died, according to the US Geological Survey.
