“It looked like an earthquake”; The family of the pickup truck that broke into their home celebrates Christmas differently this year

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — The unimaginable happened to the McCollum family on Tuesday night, as a pickup truck drove through their home.

NBC News from Fort Wayne spoke with the homeowner and a neighbor who said they rocked the neighborhood.

“I was upstairs in the bedroom there sitting on the floor wrapping Christmas presents, and suddenly it sounded like an accident like a bang, it sounded like an earthquake glass shattered,” Shannyn McCollum said.

She said it all happened quickly.

“My house shook. Everything was very loud. The car was still going through the house while it was at home. It was still running and the engine was revving up.” McCollum said.

Everyone in her family was upstairs and McCollum knew it could have been a lot worse.

“Normally on a Tuesday afternoon we’d be ready for swimming lessons and be in the rooms but luckily I decided just before Christmas let’s take some time and wrap these gifts and stay home.”

McCollum’s neighbor, Judy MacDonald, explains what she heard that night.

I was sitting and reading and I heard a loud voice. “The engine was spinning fast and the house shook like an earthquake,” she said.

McCollum says she and her family are staying in a hotel now. They’ve been given gift cards for restaurants, groceries, and even invited to stay at other people’s homes. One thing is clear if Christmas is the season of giving, this family sees it firsthand.

“There were Christmas presents in those rooms that were destroyed. Fortunately, the community was very helpful. We managed to get some stuff, in fact we took one of the Christmas trees from the upstairs bedroom and took it to the hotel room.”
