Three earthquakes hit the Greek island of Crete on Boxing Day

Three medium-sized earthquakes hit Crete on Boxing Day, and an earthquake was felt on other islands in southern Greece.

The first — which measured 5.2 on the scale — occurred on Sunday afternoon, and the second — which was just over 5.4 on the scale — occurred just before 7 p.m. local time. A smaller tremor of 4.2 followed shortly after.

There were no reports of damage or injuries as of Sunday evening.

Crete was hit by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in October, as well as a 6.0-magnitude earthquake the previous month – killing one man and injuring at least 20 others.

The first earthquake on Boxing Day hit the sea east of the island at 5.15 pm local time (3.15 pm GMT) and was at a depth of 9 km, according to the Greek Institute of Geodynamics.

Local media said the quake was felt in Crete, Karpathos, Kasos, Rhodes and Santorini.

The second earthquake occurred about two hours later, before 7 pm.

The epicenter, while still at sea, was a little closer to both Crete and Kasos, according to the Institute of Geodynamics. Its depth was recorded as 6 km.

The mayor of Kasos – a small island in the Aegean Sea – told the official news agency ANA that no buildings were damaged in the earthquakes.

He reportedly said that islanders are not particularly concerned.
