Small earthquake, multiple aftershocks reported in central South Carolina

COLOMBIA, South Carolina (AP) – People felt a slight earthquake and multiple aftershocks Monday in central South Carolina.

According to the US Geological Survey, the initial earthquake, which struck at 2:18 p.m. in Kershaw County near Elgin, measured 2.5 on the Richter scale and shook windowpanes and disrupted wildlife. The USGS later modified it to a magnitude 3.3 earthquake.

Two aftershocks occurred in the same general area, one with a magnitude of 2.5 at 5:38 p.m. and the other 2.1 on the Richter scale at 6:22 p.m., the USGS said. There were no reports of injuries or serious damage after the quakes.

With the first earthquake, it was reported that there was a sound similar to a heavy construction vehicle. It shook homes, causing doors and windows to slam into their frames and causing dogs to bark.

People reported feeling tremors throughout the District of Columbia and as far away as Lexington, about 40 miles southwest of the epicenter.

Federal officials say twenty earthquakes have been reported in South Carolina this year.
