Elgin residents were shaken by the earthquake and aftershocks

Experts say it is the first recorded earthquake to hit the area.

Elgin, SC – Four earthquakes were felt near Elgin on Monday afternoon. Experts say this is the first time an earthquake has been recorded in the region.

“Earthquakes are kind of social creatures. They tend to happen together,” said Stephen Gumm, assistant professor of geology at the College of Charleston. “They tend to happen locally to each other. So when you find one that is kind of isolated from the closest one, it’s a little unusual.”

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the first earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.3, occurred at 2:18 pm.

The USGS confirmed aftershocks of magnitude 2.5 at 5:38 pm near Elgin.

A follower of magnitude 2.1 on the Richter scale was recorded at 6:22 p.m., according to the US Geological Survey.

Another aftershock, with a magnitude of 1.7, was recorded at 10:03 p.m.

Residents were shocked by the series of earthquakes.

“Suddenly I felt a big bang under my feet, and a boom,” said resident Tracy Meek.

Another resident said, “I was in the office and my boss and I were actually checking some paperwork, and we just heard a big bang. It was really loud, and then we felt a jolt.”

Residents said they had never felt anything like it.

“We usually feel a lot of vibration since Fort Jackson has been training it and all, but this was completely different,” said a third resident.

Although experts say earthquakes do not usually cause structural damage of magnitude 3.3, people can still feel their impact.

“The windows shook, the cabinets opened, the whole floor shook, the ceiling shook, we’ve never felt anything like this before,” she continued.

The USGS reported three aftershocks, which followed hours later, with magnitudes 2.5 and 2.1. Experts say these symptoms are common and usually less severe than the initial tremor.

“It’s much rarer, there could be something bigger. But it’s more likely that there will be an earthquake that will happen in a day or a few days and it will be smaller than the first one. But we’re actually going to be watching that now,” Jaume said.
