Fifth earthquake in two days near Elgin, South Carolina

Elgin, South Carolina – The United States Geological Survey has confirmed a fifth minor earthquake in two days in the Elgin, South Carolina area.

The rumble occurred Wednesday morning at 4:12 am and recorded a magnitude of 2.4. The series of earthquakes began on Monday, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale at 2:18 pm. The first earthquake was followed by three aftershocks, the magnitude of which ranged from 2.52 to 1.74. The last one happened just after ten o’clock on Monday evening.

Historically, the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management says “swarms” of small earthquakes have been fairly common.
