Darwin 7.2 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia

Darwin residents felt the impact of the earthquake from Indonesia

The Northern Territory Premier responded to the region’s early morning earthquake, saying it was the most dramatic he had ever felt.

Michael Gunner revealed that the quake woke his wife and young son just before 5:30 AM AEST after being asked if he felt the quake.

“Bloody oath,” he told reporters.

“I stayed in bed but Kristi jumped up and was worried about (son) Hudson.”

“I think Hudson was probably the safest person in the house. It’s been so long, I’d say a few minutes.”

He detailed how the most severe earthquake that struck the Indonesian islands of Barat Daya was the largest he had experienced in Darwin.

“It was a pretty big shake,” he said.

“Obviously I’ve felt some tremors here in Darwin, this is the biggest tremor I can think of.

“I feel like anyone who lived in an upstairs unit or in a few stories… they would have felt so great.”

The earthquake is believed to have a magnitude of 7.2 and struck North East Timor at 5.25 a.m. EDT Thursday morning.

Nearly 2,000 people reported feeling the earthquake to Geoscience Australia.

There is no danger of a tsunami anywhere in Australia.

Prominent locals in the Northern Territory took to social media to report how they felt the quake, with Olympian Nova Peres tweeting, “It was strong!”

Other local residents said the quake lasted several minutes.

“This was the biggest earthquake. Somewhere nearby. I felt it in Darwin… It lasted a few minutes… Everything shook!” one user wrote.

“Darwin’s earthquake, bigger than usual. Woke me up. Still shaking. About three minutes now,” another said.
