The very strong earthquake hit the city of Kipulawan Barat Daya, about 113 kilometers northeast of Lospalos, Monepisio de Laotem, East Timor. It struck at 3.25 a.m. local time at an immediate and significant depth of 200 km, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). The classification has since been lowered slightly to a depth of 167 km by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

No tsunami warning has been issued for the neighboring islands.

The earthquake was felt 600 km away in Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory.

About 1,700 of its residents reported feeling tremors early Thursday, according to Geosciences.

The Volcano Discovery website said, based on preliminary seismic data, that “many” people likely felt the quake in the epicenter area.

But it shouldn’t cause “significant damage” other than things falling off shelves and broken windows.

The discovery of the volcano at Los Palos, which has a population of 17,200, Baucau (population 16,000) added 160 km and Vinilali (population 16,000) 176 km, the earthquake should have been felt as a “light tremor”.

She added that a second report later issued by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) mentioned the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5.

Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) with a magnitude of 7.0 and the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) of magnitude 7.2.
