More minor earthquakes shake parts of South Carolina

Six more minor earthquakes were reported in South Carolina this week, which could drive up new demand for earthquake insurance.

Wednesday’s 2.3-magnitude earthquake struck about 4:12 a.m., four miles from Elgin, in the Midlands, South Carolina, according to local news reports. The earthquake was at a depth of one kilometer. Thursday’s earthquake had a magnitude of 2.5 and struck about 7:11 a.m. 2.3 miles from Elgin.

Two days ago, four earthquakes were recorded in the state, among them a 3.3-magnitude earthquake. Authorities said those attacks followed several earthquakes in November and December near the coast, and more throughout the year across the state. A stronger earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck near Greenville, North Carolina in 2020.

State insurance agents said some landlords have added earthquake insurance and others are considering it now. Geologists said minor tremors are not unusual in the area, but larger earthquakes have struck over the years, including the 7.0 earthquake in 1886.

Geologists said some minor earthquakes, near Jenkinsville, northwest of the capital, Columbia, were due to the weight of a man-made reservoir that caused the rocks to fracture.
