Wyden, Merkley Join West Coast Senators to Lobby the USGS on Future of Earthquake Early Warning System | local news

Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley recently joined their West Coast Senate colleagues to request details from the USGS about future plans and funding needs for the West Coast Earthquake Early Warning System.

The senators wrote in a letter to the USGS Assistant Administrator for Natural Hazards, Dr. Dave Applegate. “As we all know, it is not about ‘if’ but ‘when’ the next big earthquake will strike. Therefore, it is imperative that we complete construction of the EEW system as quickly as possible and ensure that its infrastructure and operations are robust enough to provide a meaningful benefit to the overall safety of our components “.

Earthquake early warning systems aim to give vital seconds before a shaking is felt, allowing people to take cover, halt surgeries in progress, and halt public transportation to keep passengers safe. Through federal funding and partnerships with universities and other organizations, the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System is now available in Oregon, California and Washington. The system is a network of sensors that collect and share real-time information about the magnitude, location, and expected vibration of earthquakes on the West Coast to distribution partners who then deliver alerts via mobile phones and the Internet.

Senators requested information on funding needed to complete construction of seismic stations, maintenance costs and operations, plans to improve system reliability and resiliency, external sensor capability, and partnerships with external organizations on system operations and development.

In addition to Wyden and Merkley, others who signed the letter led by US Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) are US Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Patti Murray (D-Washington), and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.)

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
