Magnitude 2.8 earthquake strikes Kenor, Lahull and Spiti

A low-magnitude earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale jolted parts of the Kinur tribal district of Himachal Pradesh on Monday. There were no reports of any loss of life or property from anywhere

An earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale jolted parts of the Kinur tribal district of Himachal Pradesh on Monday. However, no loss of life and property has been reported from anywhere.

The tremors were felt at 12.39pm and lasted about 45 seconds while aftershocks were also recorded.

The Shimla Meteorological Bureau said the quake’s epicenter was in the Kinur region bordering China, at a depth of 5 km below the surface of the earth.

The quake was also felt in the neighboring Lahol and Spiti areas. The earthquake registered 2.5 on the Richter scale, and was said to have an epicenter 10 km below the surface of the earth.

Kinnaur is located in seismic zones 4 and 5. In the past 50 years, the Kinnaur region has experienced 12 earthquakes of magnitude 4 on the Richter scale.
