Officials say there was no tsunami in Hawaii after the 4.3 earthquake at Kilauea volcano

This map shows the location of two earthquakes that rocked the island of Hawaii today. The larger blue dot is where today’s 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck Kilauea volcano. The other point shows where a 2.5-magnitude earthquake occurred early this morning.

The US Geological Survey recorded a 4.3-magnitude earthquake today northeast of Pahala on the island of Hawaii, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

The USGS says the quake at 2:13 p.m. had its epicenter about five miles east-northeast of Pahala at a depth of 21 miles.

More than 125 Hawaiians reported feeling an earthquake within the first 30 minutes. Mild shaking was reported throughout the island of Hawaii, but not so strong that it caused significant damage to buildings or structures.

Ken Hoon, the scientist in charge of HVO, said the quake had no noticeable impact on the volcanoes of Mauna Loa and Kilauea.

“This earthquake is part of the ongoing seismic swarm under the Pahala region, which began in August 2019,” Hoon said in a statement. “Webcams and other data streams show no impact on the ongoing eruption at Kilauea. Please be aware that aftershocks are possible and can be felt. HVO continues to monitor Hawaii’s volcanoes for any changes.”

Hon noted that alert levels remain at Watch/Orange for Kilauea and Advisory/Yellow for Mauna Loa.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake was not large enough to cause a tsunami risk for the island of Hawaii.
