Sequence produces dozens of small earthquakes in southern Utah

KANARAVILLE, Iron County – Part of southern Utah near Zion National Park is still shaking after weeks of small earthquakes, Utah seismologists say.

Other than the fascination with seeing so many earthquakes in the same area, there are no fears of a “big quake” ready to strike the area, said Jamie Farrell, a seismologist at the University of Utah’s seismic stations.

The sequence began in the early morning of November 28. The University of Utah seismic stations recorded a 3.1-magnitude earthquake east of Colub Reservoir and about 12.5 miles southeast of Canaraville.

Only two people reported feeling the initial quake, which was about 4 miles deep, according to Farrell. It didn’t cause any damage, but it did create a series of smaller earthquakes that still shook the same area.

The US station reported Tuesday that there have been at least 53 events in the same area over the past month through 2022. That includes six small earthquakes recorded early Tuesday — the largest, measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale.

Fifteen of the earthquakes were rated at least 2.0 magnitude, while 37 were weaker.

It is unclear how the sequence began. Farrell explains that there aren’t any specific fault lines in the area, but the series of earthquakes are likely the result of underground forces too small to be mapped.

“These faults occur on some buried fault structures that are too small to reach the surface, so there is no way to draw them to the surface,” he said. “(It’s) just a small fracture system that’s likely to rupture there.”

He adds that this is common to most earthquakes reported in Utah. They do not occur due to major flaws such as many errors along the Wasatch interface.

Sequences like what’s happening in southern Utah can last for months, which is why more earthquakes southeast of Canaraville are likely to be reported in the near future. But there are no indications that it is an omen or a small earthquake leading to something larger.

There was also a 3.6-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter about 5 miles east of Zion National Park last month, the largest in that particular area in more than 60 years. The university’s seismologists said this was an unrelated event in the nearby Canaravel sequence.
