5.3-magnitude earthquake hits Antalya, Turkey

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 shook the southern Turkish resort of Antalya early on Wednesday, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said.

Disaster and Emergency Management stated that the epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 6:21 am local time (9 am GMT), was the Alanya region. It occurred at a depth of 39.52 kilometers (24.56 miles).

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority indicated that there were no reports of damage or injuries in the aftermath of the earthquake.

The Governor of Alanya, Fatih Rakemeiser, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they are investigating if there is any damage.

Antalya resident Mahir Yildiz told AA, “The cupboards and chandeliers were shaking. We woke up in horror and ran to my children’s room right away.”

Most of Turkey lies on the Anatolian tectonic plate, which lies between two major plates, the Eurasian and African, and the smaller, Arabian. As the larger African and Arab plates shift, Turkey is literally compressing, while the Eurasian plate impedes any northward movement. Thus, Turkey stands on several fault lines.

Professor Suleyman Bambal, a seismologist from Gazi University in the capital, Ankara, told CNN Turk that the quake was “normal” for Antalya and did not require “extra vigilance”. He said that the earthquake occurred at a site on the edge of the tectonic plates, and noted that Antalya had experienced earthquakes of more than 7.0 magnitude in its history. He added that it was not clear whether the quake would be a precursor to a “larger one”.

“But it is an indication that the region has seen more seismic activity in recent years and we have to be careful in this sense,” he said. Bambal noted that the fault line where the quake occurred was “as dangerous as the North Anatolian Fault Line,” causing major earthquakes in the northwest of the country, including the 1999 earthquake that killed thousands. “We remember the earthquakes in Istanbul, Izmir or Van, but there is a possibility of bigger earthquakes in the Mediterranean region,” he said.
