Experts baffled by continuing earthquakes in South Carolina

ELGIN, SC (WRDW/WAGT) – Two more earthquakes were reported in South Carolina Wednesday morning, and some geologists were scratching their heads.

Wednesday’s earthquakes measuring 2.6 and 1.5 on the Richter scale near Lugoff and Elgin were the ninth and tenth in a series of tremors that have geologists wondering how long the twitches might last.

The area has become the epicenter of a recent wave of seismic activity, starting with a 3.3-magnitude earthquake on December 27.

Since then, a total of nine more earthquakes have been recorded nearby. No injuries or damages were reported.

Smaller earthquakes are often called aftershocks of the first earthquake, says geologist Stephen Jaume at the College of Charleston. But Jaume says the fact that they lasted for 10 days is baffling.
