A 6.3-magnitude earthquake strikes the Chinese city of Qinghai

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake rocked the northern city of Qinghai, China. It caused at least one person injured and some houses damaged, the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km hence the shaking was intense.

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Qinghai, China, on Saturday, the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said.

MSC said the quake occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Magnitude 5.6 earthquake strikes Peruvian capital

Earlier in the day, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake shook the Peruvian capital Lima and surrounding areas, injuring at least one person and destroying some homes, authorities said earlier today.

The quake was recorded at 5:27 a.m. (1027 GMT), with its epicenter 19 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Lima at a depth of 116 kilometers, according to the Peruvian Institute of Geophysics (IGP).

Authorities reported one person was injured and three homes destroyed around Lima, while falling rocks blocked a major highway linking the capital with central Peru.

Some people in the capital fled their shaky homes in panic in the quake-hit country.

Civil Defense authorities said Jason Araba, 28, was injured when he fell from the third floor of his home while trying to evacuate.

Institute director Hernando Tavira said the tremor was severe due to the depth of the quake.

“This medium-sized event likely generated rockslides and landslides on roads and in valleys, and even potential damage to precarious homes,” he said in a statement on the institute’s website.

The quake was felt in the provinces of Canete and Chincha, south of Lima, and in the coastal city of Chimbote, 400 km north of the capital.

Marine hydrographic experts ruled out a tsunami.

“Peruvian people, let’s stay calm but let’s prepare for any aftershock,” President Pedro Castillo said on Twitter.

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake hit the Amazon in northern Peru in November, destroying 117 homes, injuring 12 people and leaving more than 2,000 without a roof over their heads.

Peru experiences at least 400 perceptible earthquakes every year.

It is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire – a zone of seismic activity that stretches along the western coast of the American continent.

A 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck the central coast of Peru on August 15, 2007, killing more than 500 people.
