Haitian groups meet in Louisiana to form transitional government

Baton Rouge, Los Angeles (CALE) – Political leaders from across Haiti will meet this week in Louisiana to try to work out a deal to form a transitional government and hold elections.

According to Bloomberg, politicians, academics and NGOs will be part of the summit, which begins Thursday, January 13th at the Southern University Law Center. Bloomberg reports that at least six political blocs will offer different solutions to try to reform a nation that has been in crisis.

You may remember that the president of Haiti was murdered last July. The term of the interim prime minister expires next month. However, even before that, the country was in crisis with no functional legislative or judicial authority, leading to an escalation of gang violence and earthquakes.

For another Louisiana call, retired Lieutenant General Russell Honore will mediate the sessions. The summit is led by Haiti and funded by the community.
