In honor of all the victims, the United Nations remembered not only the hundreds of thousands of Haitians who lost their lives 12 years ago, but also many thousands more who were permanently wounded.

At that time, about 300,000 people were injured, and 1.5 million were displaced during the 35-second earthquake.

The United Nations system in Haiti honored the staff members who died, in a statement issued on Wednesday, calling it “one of the darkest days in its history.”

Since then, “Haiti has relied on the resilience of its people, the work of its institutions, and the help of its many friends and supporters to overcome the devastation caused by that disaster.”

Messages of remembrance were exchanged across the United Nations system. “Every day we remember the victims and honor their legacy through the work of the organization,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a tweet. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) renewed its support for “Haiti’s Path to Recovery, Stability and Prosperity”.

Last August, another major earthquake struck the southern regions of the country, killing more than 2,200, injuring more than 12,000, and destroying thousands of homes.

And the same sense of resilience and solidarity emerged again, as Haitians responded quickly and effectively to another disaster.
