Satellite imagery shows how the area around the Haitian capital has changed after the devastating 2010 earthquake. On the hillside that was once empty, there are now 200,000 people, many of whom survived the earthquake.

The earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010 lasted for only 35 seconds, but it killed hundreds of thousands of people, injured more than a million people, and displaced 1.5 million Haitians. On June 1, NASA’s Earth Observatory Earth Day image showed the tremendous difference in Port-au-Prince years before the earthquake, and today, when an already accidental city can be seen in previously deserted land.

In the first image, taken by the Landsat 5 satellite on February 28, 1986, the area around Port-au-Prince is still completely green, showing land removed from forests but not occupied. According to the NASA Earth Observatory, prior to the 2010 earthquake, only the goats were residents of the area.

The second photo, recently taken on February 24, 2020, showed a significantly different landscape as the deserted land became occupied. In an empty hill north of Port-au-Prince, a city called Canaan – the country’s third largest city – now stands.

It was many residents now residing in Canaan who were displaced by the earthquake and forced to live in tents long after the event. However, there are also some residents who were not destroyed by the earthquake, but chose to move to the city.

By the time the second photo was taken earlier this year, more than 200,000 people had moved to Canaan, and many of them had to build their own homes from their small incomes.

The NASA Earth Observatory said: “The city has grown very quickly and in unpredictable ways so that maintaining accurate and up-to-date maps is a challenge.”

Unfortunately, even more than 10 years after the earthquake, many survivors remain at the same risk as before.

“After ten years, we see a greater concentration of people in the metropolitan area,” these two economist Kissner Farrell told AFP in January. “If we had an earthquake of the same magnitude, the results would be the same. The country has not been rebuilt, and we will return to square one.”
