The Android earthquake warning system praised for its accuracy after a major earthquake occurred near Taranaki

In the minutes before a long, resounding earthquake in Aotearoa just before midnight, hundreds of New Zealanders got a chance to get ready thanks to the “amazing” alert system buzzing on their cell phones.

The epicenter of the 5.8-magnitude Taranaki earthquake at 11:49 pm on Wednesday was 25 kilometers east of Stratford. Its estimated depth was 187 km.

The earthquake was rated “severe” in Geonet’s “sense reporting” feature by several people in Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Whanganui, Wairarapa and Wellington, as well as near the Taranaki epicenter.

Thanks to Android Earthquake Alert, created by Google, many people received a message before the vibration, telling them the rated power and how far away it was from them.

Alerts, developed by Google, are being trialled in New Zealand and Greece – and New Zealanders seem to love them.

Jill Jolly, head of the Natural Hazards and Risks Team for GNS Science, says the system could allow people to “prepare mentally” for an earthquake and take immediate action when it is safe to do so.
