Magnitude 6.6 earthquake hits Indonesia’s Java island, World News

An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Java on Friday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, causing buildings to shake in Jakarta.

At 0905 GMT, the earthquake hit the southwest of the island at a depth of 37 km.

The quake was felt in the capital and buildings shook. No tsunami warning was issued, and there were no early reports of casualties or damage.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, some Jakartans were evacuated from their homes and hundreds waited outside.

People in an apartment complex in Kalibata, in the south of the capital, evacuated their homes as the quake struck, according to Noor Latifa, a 25-year-old resident.

“I was working from home and noticed my laptop was moving…Then the door started shaking and the hanging things were making noise,” Latifa said.

“I brought my roommate, who was in the bathroom, and we ran out of the apartment. Outside, people were rushing toward the emergency staircase.”

Because of its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity where tectonic plates that stretch from Japan to Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin meet, Indonesia is subject to numerous earthquakes.
