Magnitude 6.7 earthquake strikes Indonesia’s Java island

A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale hit the Indonesian island of Java on Friday afternoon.

The country’s Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency said the quake occurred 52 km off Banten province at a depth of 10 km, but it was not likely to cause a tsunami. Banten is located southwest of the capital, Jakarta.

Dwikorita Karnawati, head of the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency, told Bloomberg that the government is monitoring the sea surface even when mathematical models have shown that there is no possibility of a tsunami.

“I was very scared, and suddenly there was an earthquake and it was very strong,” said Annie, a resident of Jakarta who works as a nanny.

Strong earthquakes shook high-rise buildings in Jakarta. “The tremor was horrible…Everything in my room was swaying,” Laila Angasari, a Jakarta resident who lives on the 19th floor of an apartment building, told The Associated Press. “We ran outside and went down the stairs in a panic.”

Due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is prone to high seismic activity.

Last month, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Flores, prompting the country’s monitoring agency to issue a tsunami warning, which was later rescinded.

In January 2021, a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.2 killed 105 people and injured nearly 6,500 in West Sulawesi Province.
